In my experience Hypnotherapy works really well for fears and phobias. In fact its something I treat often.
During the many years I have been in practice as a Clinical Hypnotherapist one of the things I’ve enjoyed most is working with clients on fears and phobias. The reason I find this so satisfying is that it’s one of the areas where you can get a really meaningful and visible shift in the client, in a session. There is often a noticeable ‘Oh wow’ moment when the client realises what’s happened. This isn’t always that obvious, when when it does happen it’s hugely rewarding.
Examples of clients who made great and swift progress include a young woman who had been given the opportunity to travel to Australia for an internship. But as she pointed out, Australia is full of spiders and she had a phobic fear of them all, from tiny to huge, all were just terrifying to her. Some time later she sent a photo to her Mom of her standing up close and personal with a rather large spider in its impressive web. The photo taken by a friend through the web! For dramatic effect. Great result.
This shows that not only can we get passed a fear or phobia, but we can get a great boost to our self esteem when we we do. That can have benefits that ripple out in a clients life “if I can overcome that, I can certainly do this” is a gift that keeps on giving.
Another huge shift, was a client whose hubby had booked a trip to New York as a way to force the issue of her phobia about flying. He waited till it was paid for and couldn’t be cancelled before he told her about it. She had just two weeks to prepare herself. We had a couple of sessions. She sent me a text with a photo of her at the Empire State Building! She had a great trip.
I was particularly pleased for this client as I had previously been afraid of flying, had treatment and overcome it successfully. My mind often drifts back to that point years ago when I walked out of the aircraft and stood at the top of the steps above the tarmac. The warm air, and scent of flowers that told me I had just landed in another country was so empowering! It’s part of why I later chose to do what I do now. Helping people to get that buzz for themselves.
I could go on. The man so afraid of birds he never visited town centres (pigeons) parks (ducks) or the seaside (gulls) and never sat out in his own garden. The woman with a fear of frogs I treated at a community event in the corner of a cafe. The man diagnosed with Pernicious Anaemia for which he will require regular injections, and who had a needle phobia. All helped, all now like many others, phobia free.
I think my all time favourite was a young Mom with emetaphobia who was unable to look after her children when they were ill. At the end of her last session, she paused on the way out and asked “Andrea was I afraid of something? I can’t quite get my head around what it was all about” that’s ok I said, it’s all sorted now. Her confused smile has staid with me.
So if you have a fear or phobia, it isn’t inevitable that you must just put up with it. Together I genuinely believe we can get you into a much better place, much more comfortable and empowered, much more free. If you would like to make my day, bring me a phobia to work on 🙂
